Summer!
It's official: the Berlin summer has
arrived, bringing along great events, fun
activities, and... lots of berries! As you
may have noticed, the city is packed with
strawberry stands at almost every corner.
The most famous ones are the ones from
Karls Erdbeerhof (www.karls.de), which
look like large strawberries on wheels, but
any supermarket will offer a good variety
of local berries. And if you are looking
to immerse yourself in a truly enjoyable,
all-German summer activity, take to the
countryside in and around Berlin and
do the picking yourself. There are lots of
Beerengärten, or "berry gardens," which let you pick all the berries you want
and pay at the end, and it's a great way to spend a few hours in the sun and
do something with the locals. Website www.berlinerbeerengarten.de lists
some of the most popular berry fields in Berlin.
Just make sure to be back in town before the sun goes down, because we've
selected lots of fun places to enjoy the golden rays, from poolside lounges to
city beaches and beer gardens (p. 10–12). And if you are around the first week
of the month, don't forget to take a walk in the city's fashion district to catch
some of the latest trends and possibly spot the models and designers in town
for Berlin Fashion Week.
