Berlin PREMIUM
When I think of the Berlin
summer, I think of blue skies FREE
with fast-moving clouds, trees HHOOPPOONFF–
painted in the largest variety
of green shades, of warm days TOUR
and fresh breezes. But what I like
most about summer in Berlin is Ticket
the fact that no matter how deep into the urban texture you
immerse yourself, there's always a green escape nearby, be it a City guide
playground, a park, or a whole forest. Discounts
This combination of urban and natural is what makes Berlin
PORTRAIT BY THOMAS HEDRICH/FOTOSTUDIO-CHARLOTTENBURG; SKYLINE © TOTALPICS/ISTOCK/THINKSTOCK special to nature lovers, and an example of this is the Naturpark
Südgelände Schöneberg (S Priesterweg). This former railway
yard was last used in the 1940s and lay abandoned throughout
the Cold War due to the reduced train service in West Berlin.
Five decades of complete neglect allowed nature to regain
possession of the area, and the result today is a wild urban
woodland. With train tracks interspersed with trees and shrubs,
old locomotive halls surrounded by high grass, and ancient,
abandoned trains, this is one of the most unusual parks you will
ever see, and it is particularly popular with photographers who
go there to capture the evocative combination of Berlin history
and nature's ability to quickly reconquer its spaces.
